Looking for a fun, classy alternative to the typical wedding variety band? Squat is an award winning jazz quartet in the Athens/Atlanta area, yet is capable of much more. After performing a set of jazz standards including compositions by Duke Ellington, Cole Porter, Gershwin, and Jobim, a typical Squat wedding will build into a night of hip-shaking dance music including salsa, swing, reggae, afro-cuban, samba, and jump blues. Since 1994, Squat has developed a strong regional following performing at festivals and clubs as well as providing spirited jazz music for weddings and private functions throughout the Southeast and beyond. Squat is capable of a night of beautiful lyrical jazz or a night of high energy dancing to mambo and Bob Marley; every event has unique needs. If you are looking for the 'Chicken Dance', the 'Macarena' , or 'YMCA' , then Squat is not your band. If you are looking for a band to play Duke Ellington, Ray Charles, and mambo, then read further and check out the enclosed CD of jazz standards and dance music.
All four members of the band are accomplished jazz musicians; several of the band members hold advanced degrees in music, play multiple instruments, and have performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival, the Jazz A Vienne festival, and the World Sacred Music Festival in Bangalore, India. Squat s instrumentation includes 2 vocalists, piano, tenor saxophone, guitar, upright bass, percussion, and drums. More musicians can be added to the group including vocalists, percussionists, and horn players. For bigger occasions, the group can expand to an 8 or 10 piece salsa band, Grogus (bio and demo for Grogus are available on request).
Ceremony Music: If you are already planning on having Squat perform at your wedding, consider having members of the group perform your ceremony for a packaged rate. Guitarist Trey Wright has been performing classical and acoustic music at ceremonies over the past five years as has pianist and saxophonist Tommy Somerville. Many combinations of music and instrumentation are possible (ceremony music CDs are available upon request).
